Brief
University of Helsinki has entered into an agreement with FEI Europe B.V. - Branch Denmark for the delivery of a cryogenic electron microscopy system, including a 300 kV transmission cryo-electron microscope and a cryogenic focused ion beam scanning electron microscope. The system will be delivered to Helsinki-Uusimaa, Finland, with a project duration of 5 months, at a total value of 6,664,836 EUR. The system must be capable of loading 10 or more samples at once, hold samples at 90 K or lower, and the cryo-FIBSEM cryo-stage must cool to at least -170 °C in under 30 minutes and maintain cryogenic conditions for 20 hours or more without liquid nitrogen dewar refill. The cryo-FIBSEM must also have a 360-degree continuous rotation of the cryo-stage and documented use in tomography applications in at least three peer-reviewed scientific publications with structures reporting resolution better than 8 Å. The current Falcon 4i detector must be installable on the new microscope.

From the notice
The Institute of Biotechnology Structural Biology Platform (INSTRUCT-HiLFE) will be upgrading its cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) services. The current 200 kV transmission electron microscope will be replaced with equipment offering higher resolution for both single-particle and tomography analysis. To enable this, we will establish an integrated workflow for producing samples for tomography and single-particle analysis. Specifically, we will acquire a 300 kV cryogenic transmission electron microscope (cryo-TEM) suitable for high-resolution structural biology, together with a software and hardware compatible cryogenic focused ion beam scanning electron microscope (cryo-FIBSEM) for lamella sample preparation required in high-resolution tomography. The instruments will be installed at the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki (UH). Delivery and installation will take place in 2027.
